Content Writing and Copywriting FAQs
Someone who uses words to deeply connect with an audience across various marketing channels. With an understanding of psychology and behaviour change, they can positively influence a reader to take a specific action.
If that sounds a bit textbook to you, don’t worry. Here’s my woo-woo definition: It’s science and magic coming together to make your ideal customer fall in love with what you do and buy your product or service.
How much does it cost to hire a copywriter?
I price by project, as you can see on my service pages. Every client is unique, and so are their copy requirements. I’m transparent with my base project fees, so you know if I’m the right copywriter for you. (I’m not too fond of businesses hiding their prices, so I don’t want my clients to feel the same way). We only agree on the final fee after we’ve had an initial chat and you’re happy with my proposal.
You might have looked at bidding sites like Upwork or Fiverr. There are soooo many reasons to avoid them like the plague, but I’m not here to give them airtime. All I’ll say is that ‘paying by the word’ is a bizarre concept in this industry. Ask any professional copywriter, and they’ll tell you the same: our skill is conveying a message using as few words as possible. One hundred words of powerful copy has far more impact than 1000 words of waffle.
Nope – this is my full-time gig. I went from working 9-5 like Dolly and pivoted into freelance copywriting. It keeps me in biscuits and ensures the kids’ snack cupboard never runs bare.
This is an interesting and debatable topic. I know because I’ve debated it myself many times. I don’t believe such a job title exists. But every professional copywriter I know utilises SEO to benefit their clients.
I think SEO is great. I research keywords and phrases and look at the top sites Google currently favours.
I write copy and naturally weave in those keywords and phrases, so the words flow. I’m not here to aggressively shove them in for the sake of the algorithm.
SEO experts make all sorts of promises and guarantees about website ranking. Personally, I choose to write in my client’s brand voice so that I connect with their audience. Including some SEO terms and crafting title tags and meta descriptions helps with their organic reach. But it’s just a tiny part of the bigger marketing mix.
Yes! You can call me a freelancer or a copywriting consultant or a small business owner or a solopreneur. I’ll answer to any and all those titles.
Why should I hire a freelance copywriter?
There is a myriad of reasons (‘myriad’ is a great word, isn’t it?). Here’s a handy bullet list for you:
- You have total flexibility. Hire me as and when you need me, which means…
- You save on tax, NI, pension, holiday pay and insurance because you’re not employing a member of staff.
- You get a fresh pair of eyes to look at your online marketing and make suggestions you haven’t thought of.
- You get the creative benefit of someone with experience across a wide range of sectors.
- You don’t pay agency rates.
- I work remotely, so it doesn’t matter where in the world you are. I’ve worked with clients in San Francisco, Melbourne and Hawaii. I’m based in East Sussex, UK, and I’m happy to meet IRL if you’re nearby.
Not usually, no. I choose to specialise as a copywriter because my background is in PR, and I’ve 20-odd years of experience in writing to create news stories and influence behaviour. So copywriting makes the most sense for me. My niche is online copywriting, focusing on website and email copy and creating email marketing strategies.
Yes, I can. If you have regular work that needs outsourcing – for example, you want me to take care of all your email communication – it makes sense to work on retainer. I can dedicate time to you each month, and you benefit from discounted rates.
Why is email marketing important?
What a question. How about thinking of it in terms of ROI? For every £1 you spend on email marketing, you can expect an average of £37 return. Pretty decent, huh? And think about open rates for a minute. Only 21% of emails actually get opened. But when you send a welcome sequence of emails – HELLO – the open rate jumps to 82%. Those customers WANT to hear from you! They signed up, and now you have a great way to communicate with them away from the noise of social media.
But the real biggy for me is ownership. Imagine if social media disappeared overnight and all your followers vanished. Where would that leave you? Your email list is all yours. And that gives you so much potential!
